Val d'Orcia from the heart
The Val d'Orcia is one of the most photographed and recognisable landscapes in Italy: rolling hills, rows of cypresses, white gravel roads, medieval hilltop villages. From Convento Santa Chiara in Sarteano you are right at the centre of everything — a perfect strategic base from which to radiate in every direction.
This three-day itinerary is designed for those who want to see the best without rushing, respecting the slow pace that the Val d'Orcia teaches everyone who spends time here.
Day 1 — Pienza and the Val d'Orcia
Morning: Pienza, the ideal city
Start with the pearl of the Renaissance: Pienza (35 km from Sarteano, 40 minutes). Commissioned by Pope Pius II in the 15th century as an "ideal city", Pienza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an extraordinarily harmonious historic centre. Visit the Cathedral, Palazzo Piccolomini and above all stand at the gardens: the view over the Val d'Orcia from here is among the most iconic in all of Tuscany.
Don't forget to taste the Pienza DOP Pecorino, the most famous cheese of the area.
Afternoon: San Quirico d'Orcia and Bagno Vignoni
15 km from Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia is a tranquil village with the splendid Collegiate Church of Saints Quiricus and Julitta. Nearby, Bagno Vignoni is unique: instead of a central piazza there is a large medieval thermal pool already known to the Romans. Sunset here is unforgettable.
Day 2 — Montalcino and Brunello
Morning: Montalcino
Montalcino (48 km from Sarteano) is the home of Brunello, one of Italy's greatest wines. The medieval fortress offers a panoramic view over the Orcia and Arbia valleys. A cellar visit and tasting is practically obligatory.
Afternoon: Sant'Antimo Abbey
A few kilometres from Montalcino, the Abbey of Sant'Antimo is one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture in Italy, set in an olive grove with a timeless atmosphere. If possible, attend one of the Gregorian chant services.
Day 3 — Montepulciano and return
Morning: Montepulciano
End with Montepulciano (16 km from Sarteano), perched on a hill overlooking both valleys. Piazza Grande with the Cathedral and Palazzo Tarugi is one of the most beautiful Renaissance squares in Tuscany. And of course, a tasting of Vino Nobile DOCG is a must before heading home.
